Bath Stone is a soft oolitic limestone. It can be cut and carved using wood-carving tools.

30cm (12inch) cube of Bath stone marked up and ready to go.
Finding the levels of the features.
Using a saw to find the arms.
I like to mark out where everything is so I can create the picture of the finished piece long before it’s there.
This piece is symmetrical, so I work on both sides at the same time.
Starting to shape the detail and find the face.
I keep the maquette close all the time for measuring and comparison.
Time for a visit to the coiffeur.
